Russell T. McCutcheon

Russell T. McCutcheon is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Alabama. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1995. His areas of interest include theories of myths and rituals, the history of the publicly funded study of religion in the U.S., as well as the history and politics of the classification “religion.” McCutcheon’s major publications include a monograph on the politics of the study of religion in the U.S., Manufacturing Religion (Oxford University Press, 1997; paperback, 2003; and Greek translation, 2003), and two collections of essays, Critics Not Caretakers: Redescribing the Public Study of Religion (State University of New York Press, 2001) and The Discipline of Religion: Structure, Meaning, Rhetoric (Routledge, 2003). One of his most recent projects is a monograph series, with Equinox Press, UK: “Religion in Culture: Studies in Social Contest and Construction.”
